Worship Communion 8th Sunday of Trinity
Week of 18 to 23 July 2016
 “The identity of God’s people”

Introduction: Jesus’s definition of his disciples’ identity was clear, “Just as I do not belong to the words, they do not belong to the words” Jn.17:16. So God sets apart those who belong to Him and tells them, ”Come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the LORD. Don’t touch their filthy things” 2 Co.6:17. Then He makes a covenant with them in these terms: ”I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty – Is.52:11,12” 2 Co.6:18.

Monday, 18: The people of God choose the right.
“If you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman” Jr.15:19b.
Reading 1: Rm.6:14-19.Reading 2: Jr.15:19-21. Preaching 1 (option). Preaching 2: Jr.15:19.
Introduction: What worthless are sins and the ways of this sinful world. Those who follow this path are led to death and perdition, and cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven and eternal life. Therefore, God commands and warns his people sternly: “Do not love the word or anything that belongs to the word”1 Jn.2:15. “Don’t you know that to be the world’s friend means to be God’s enemy? People who want to be the world’s friends make themselves God’s enemies”Jas.4:4. The Lord says, “You are mine” Is.43:1d.

Tuesday, 19: The people of God, a people of God’s Spirit.
“Those who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s children” Rm.8:14.
Reading 1: Jn.14:22-26. Reading 2: Rm.8:12-17. Preaching 1 (option). Preaching 2: Rm.8:14.
Introduction: It is written: “ The Lord knows those who are his”, besides, “All who say that they belong to the Lord must turn away from wrongdoing” 2 Tim.2:19, i.e. they must get rid of sin and all its works. For they are “God’s special possession” (1 Pet.2:9), people He has sanctified for Himself, so that they does not sin nor serve sin any longer. The Apostle John said: “None of those who are children of God continue to sin” 1 Jn.3:9a. As such, “God’s children live, not by sin but by the Spirit of God”.

Wednesday, 20: The people of God do the will of God.
“ But only those who do that my Father in heaven wants them to do do ” Mat.7:21.
Reading 1: Is.29:13-14. Reading 2: Mt.7:15-21.. Preaching 1 (option). Preaching 2: Mt.7:21.
Introduction: God’s children are children of righteousness, so they serve righteousness. This is how they please God.  On the other side, Jesus says to those who do not and do not want to practice righteousness: “You are the children of your father, the Devil, and you want to follow your father’s desires” Jn.8:44. The Apostle John said: “My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action” 1 Jn.3:18. In this regard, the Apostle James reminds us: “Faith without actions is dead” Jas.2:26.

Thursday, 21: The people of God, a people of the word of God.
“Christ’s message in all its richness must live in your hearts” Col.3:16a.
Reading 1: Jn.8:31-38. Reading 2: Col.3:9-17. Preaching 1 (option). Preaching 2: Col.3:16.
Introduction: Those who receive and keep the word of God are strengthened and protected according to the Psalmist’s word, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” Ps.119:105. It is both the path of God’s will and the sword of the Spirit that overcomes all evil (Eph.6:17). God gives this assurance to his people: “I am giving you the words you must speak. Today I give you authority over nations and kingdoms to uproot and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant” Jer.1:9-10.

Friday, 22: The people of God, a people of prayer.
“Pray at all times” 1 Thess.5:17.
Reading 1: Lk.6:12-19. Reading 2: 1 Thess.5:14-19. Preaching 1 (option). Preaching 2: 1 Thess.5:17.
Introduction: He who wants to be in communion with God likes praying. He lives constantly in prayer, but not out of habit nor in superficial ways (Mt.6:6).  Heart and spirit connection with God keeps one from all hypocrisy and falsity. Jesus Himself gave the example to the believers and to all those who follow Him and who want to serve God, according to what is written, “At that time Jesus went up a hill to pray and spent the whole night there praying to God” Lk.6 :12. This is what communion with God is all about.

Saturday, 23: The people of God, a people of love.
“Love one another. As I have loved you”Jn.13:34b.
Reading 1: 1 Pet.1:22-25. Reading 2: Jn.13:34-35. Preaching 1 (option). Preaching 2: Jn.13:34.
Introduction: Love is the seal of being God’s child as “God is love” 1 Jn.4:16. Indeed, those born of God have been given his love so that they may love Him and love all men. This is a noble legacy and an immeasurable richness that God gives to his people, through which He identifies those who are really his, and which is at the same time the foundation which anchors all God’s laws and commands. In this respect, Jesus said, “I know my sheep and my sheep know me” Jn.10:14b.
