Lutheran Church Malagasy Song and Gospel Sunday XVII after Trinity – week of 04 to 09 November 2019 « God is Faithful » *

The topic‟s meaning: God is faithful because He is righteous, being a God who does not betray his covenant nor change his word but fulfills it. He certainly does so because, according to the Scripture, He is a “God, who does not lie” (Tit.1:2). He is truly jealous of his righteousness, as described by Balaam when he refused Balak‟s proposal to curse Israel: “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” Num 23:19. As a result, He gives the guarantee that none of his words fall on the ground, saying, “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” Is 55:10-11. Paul testified about the truthfulness and the faithfulness of the word of God to the Corinthians, saying, “But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not „Yes‟ and „No.‟ For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy—was not „Yes‟ and „No,‟ but in him it has always been „Yes.‟ For no matter how many promises God has made, they are „Yes‟ in Christ. And so through him the „Amen‟ is spoken by us to the glory of God” 2 Cor 1:18-20. Surely God does not forget his words so He gave a sign to Jeremiah who said, “The word of the Lord came to me: „What do you see, Jeremiah?‟ „I see the branch of an almond tree,‟ I replied. The Lord said to me, „You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled” Jer 1:11-12. It is both our responsibility, and in our interests, to believe his words, for “All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant” Ps 25:10. Paul confirmed this, saying, ”If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown himself” 2 Tim 2:13. Therefore we will say, “No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause” Ps 25:3.

Monday 04: God is faithful.
”Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; He is the faithful God” Dt 7: 9a.
Reading 1: Jn.14: 1-7. Reading 2: Dt 7: 9-11. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Dt 7: 9.
Introduction: « God is faithful, » this means that God is neither changing nor faithless. He remains constant in his word, his work and his love. So He utterly deserves to be trusted, and makes a covenant with those who trust Him, a covenant of trust. Those wo rely on Him and look to his salvation can claim: « God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever » Ps 73:26—He who reveals Himself and works through his Son Jesus Christ, the ‖Faithful and Righteous‖ Rev 19:11.

Tuesday 05: The work of God remains faithful.
« He who began a good word in you wil carry it on to completion » Ph 1: 6.
Reading 1: Joh 14: 8-11. Reading 2: Ph 1: 6-11. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Ph 1: 6.
Introduction: The work of God is not made of man’s hand, but by his power and authority which are above all power and authorities (John 3: 31). In this respect, He says, « Yes, from ancient days I am He. No one can deliver out from my hand. When I act, who can reverse it? » Is 43: 13. For this reason He is working to bring his salvation and renewal for us sinful men (2 Cor 5: 17), who believe in Him, whom He adopts as children (John 1:12), and on whom He pours his everlasting blessing (Ps 21: 6).

Wednesday 06: God’s mercy is faithful.
« The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go » Mt 18: 27.
Reading 1: Ps 103: 1-5. Reading 2: Mt 18: 23-35. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Mt 18: 26-27.
Introduction: God’s mercy is faithful so that He forgives our sins and does not repay us according to our wrongdoings (Ps 103: 10/1 Jn 1: 9). In this regard, He says: ―For I desire mercy » (Os 6: 6). It is then our duty to give Him thanks and to honor Him, saying, « How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me? » Ps 116:12; and to be merciful and forgive our neighbors in keeping with the Lord’s prayer, « Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors » Mt 6:12.

Thursday 07: The forgiveness of sin that God gives is faithful.
« Take heart, my child, your sins are forgiven » Mt 9: 2b.
Reading 1: 1 Joh 1: 5-10. Reading 2: Mt.9: 1-8. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Mt 9: 1-2.
Introduction: The forgiveness of sin that God gives is a certainty. It remains unchanged, and as such, is trustworthy. Nothing can indeed thwart God’s redemption plan, in which He gave his Son Jesus Christ as the Lamb whose blood was shed to justify the sinners, so that they may inherit God’s kingdom (Rom.8: 17). For it is written, « If anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One » 1 Joh 2: 1, who intercedes and pleads unceasingly for us (Rom 8: 34). Therefore, it is written, « Who will separate us from the love of Christ? » Rom 8: 35a.

Friday 08: The people of God trust Him.
« Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me » Ps 23: 4.
Reading 1: Rom 8: 31-37. Reading 2: Ps 23: 1-6. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Ps 23: 4.
Introduction: The people of God trust Him because He is a faithful God. He is with them, protects them, and grants them justice. In this respect, He exhorts them, « So, do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for Im a your God, I wil strangtehn you and help you; I will uphold you my righteoaus hand » Es 41: 10. They will then claim,  » In God I trust; I will no be afraid. What can man do to me? » Ps 56: 11.

Saturday 09: Jesus Christ, everlasting assurance for men.
« Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever » Heb 13: 8.
Reading 1: Is 46: 1-4. Reading 2: Heb 13: 5-8. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Heb 13: 8.
Introduction: Blessed are those who have Jesus as their Provider and Savior. He is a Friend who does not give up in difficult times and who says, « Come to me, all you are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest » Mt 11: 28-29. The Lord God vouches for Him, He said, « See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chose and preciouscornestone, and th one who trusts in him will be put to shame – Is 28:16″1 Pet 2: 6.
