Malagasy Lutheran Church Song & Gospel Sunday XXIII after Trinity – week from 11th to 16th November 2019 “God’s people, servants of righteousness” *

The topic’s meaning: God is righteous and loves righteousness; He hates evil (Ps11:7) and wants his people to be like Him (Ps.34:15-16). John the Apostle said, ”I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are ware walking in the truth” 3 Jn 4. It is the nature of the children of God to serve righteousness, which is the will of God (Rom 12:2). To love and serve righteousness is a godly attitude produced by the Spirit, as He is ”the Spirit of truth” in accordance to Jesus’ word, ”But when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in to all truth” Jn 16:13. The righteous man has indeed been born of God, according to Jesus’word, ”Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit” Jn 3:6. On the other hand, to those who hate righteousness Jesus says, ”You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire” Jn 8:44. Actually, talking about God’s people as servants of righteousness refers to the believers who received Jesus and to whom ”He gave the right to be children of God” Jn 1:12—those who have been set free from the bondage of sin and have become ”servants of the righteousness” (Ro 6:8). It is fulfilled in them according to what is written, ”Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Cor 5:17. The old things include all the work of darkness and wickedness resulting from the devil’s work and the dominion of sin; while the new things are the life and the work in which God’s righteousness reigns. Paul the Apostel urges the believers, ”Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness” Ro 6:19. And since keeping righteouness sets man free, Jesus says, ”If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” Jn 8:31-32.

Introduction: Wickedness appears in various forms, such as theft, deceit, betrayal, fraud and many others, but there is one in particular that God can not put up with: hypocrisy, which is pretending to be righteous and using that as a cover for wickedness. Jesus rebuked the Jewish religious leaders saying, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!” Mat.23:13,15,16,23,25,27,29 seven times in a row. At the same time He warned His disciples, “Be careful,” “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees” Mt 16:6, which is hypocrisy.

Because of the increase of the leaders who falsifie the truth, Paul urged Timothy to Have nothing to do with those ”having a form of godliness but denying its power” 2 Tim.3:5.”For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ” 2 Co.11:13, and ”by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people” Ro.16:18, even those who are ignorant and weak in the faith.

For ”those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified” Ro 8:30.
