Malagasy Lutheran Church Song and Gospel 16th Sunday following the Trinity: September 28 – October 03, 2020 « God is One »

The message: The title “God is One” means that He is the only God and that there is and will be no other. This is how He answered Moses, when asked as to the Name under which he should introduce Him to the children of Israel: « I AM WHO I AM » Ex 3:14. He’s the only One, and He has no substitute according to his word, « To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One » Isa 40:25. For this is the basis of His commandment that distinguishes Him the Creator from all of his creation, saying, « You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth » Ex 20:3-4. Because the lack of the aspiration to know God and the refusal to accept Him and the only One God result from « idolatry, » which is the worship of « false gods » and the reliance on them. Such as created things like the sun, the fire, the water…, the work of one’s hands and possessions like sculpture, money, knowledge… More than anything, this inflames the jealousy of God, The Holy One – meaning the Only One – who said: « You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me » Ex 20:5. In short, God does not dwell in what is made by human hand or designed by human mind as He is the One; Only He can save by means of his Son, as it is written, « There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved » Acts 4:12. Blessed are those who believe in Him, for « whoever believes in the Son has eternal life » Jn 3:36a.

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change » Jas 1:16-17. Therefore, « Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness! » Ps 150:2.

Introduction: Many things are considered by men as having the ability to save, so they trust them and rely on them as saving gods. Now, it is written: « A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine » Ps 33:16-18. Jesus said, « My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness » 2 Cor 12:9a.

Introduction: The way to salvation is unique, even faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Thus, get rid of all false gods. For the Word of God says: « Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship is there between light and darkness? What agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? » 2 Cor 6:14-16a. Jesus says, « I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me » Jn 14:6.

Introduction: Give glory to the Lord because there is no one like Him. God is both unique and jealous. He said, « I am the Lord: that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols » Isa 42:8. Therefore, He gives us a promise: « For those who honor me I will honor » 1 Sam.2:30d.
