Malagasy Lutheran Church Song and Gospel Sunday III before Easter – March 08-13, 2021 « God makes a covenant of redemption » *

The work of redemption that God has made consists in vindicating sinners by setting them freem from the power of sin and the penalty of sin, so that they may be justified and be able to reconcile again with God, their Creator and Savior. The Apostle John stated in this respect: « But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God » Jn 1:12. This refers to the power and the right to inherit God’s kingdom and the eternal life in it. Five aspects are addressed below: 1 / God has already offered the redemption, that is, the purchase of the sinners so that they may be rescued from the bondage of sin and the devil’s accusation. For sin is what makes the sinners guilty in the sight of God, so that they neither find justice in Him nor have part with Him. However, the Word of God says, « Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us » Rom 8:33-34. 2 / Our redemption as sinners was bought at a high price⸺with the precious blood of Christ, « like that of a lamb without defect or blemish » 1 Pet 1:19; as « without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins » Heb 9:22b. This is also how Jesus Christ made a covenant for us, according to the words He spoke to His disciples, saying, « This is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins » Mt 26:28. 3 / This is what is called « the covenant of redemption. » Therefore, God’s purpose in making the covenant is that we make common cause with Him and stand firm in order to abide in it, because the redemption that Christ made was accomplished once and for all and it was intended to remain « an eternal redemption » (Heb 9:12b). 4 / To this end, it is up to everyone to believe and choose to receive this covenant or not. To those who received it, Jesus says, « Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life » Jn 3:36a. 5 / Jesus gives truly an assurance of redemption to those who come to Him, saying: « Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven » Mt 9:2b.
