Malagasy Lutheran Church Song & Gospel Sunday X following Trinity, August 8-14, 2021 « Jesus Christ, the Life-giving Way of God » *

Introduction: The Scriptures say: « There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death » Pr 14:12. In this way, Satan works very hard to mislead people so that they would be lost like him, and « […] to lead astray, if possible, even the elect » Mt 24:24. The lost are those who are separated from God the Creator and Owner of life and salvation. Thanks be to the Father who sent and gave us the saving and life-giving Way of life, in the person of His Son Jesus Christ, who said: « I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life » Jn 8:12. Thus, the Lord prompts us to make a choice and exhorts us, saying: « I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live » Deut 30:19. What does this life consist in? In « loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob” Deut 30:20. That means to be reconciled with God and « to stand for His cause » and « to walk His path ». For Jesus the Good Shepherd said: « My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand » Jn 10:27-28. Jesus gives great assurance for our lives when He says: « I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me » Jn 14:6. He is the sure way, and He reconciles us with God; and through Him also we receive God’s grace and inherit eternal life. For it is written: « It is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ […] » Rom 8:16-17.

Monday, 09th: Jesus Christ, the life-giving Way of God.
« I am the way, and the truth, and the life » Jn 14:6a.
Reading 1: Pr 3:13-18. Reading 2: Jn 14:1-7. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Jn 14:5-6.
Introduction: There are many paths that human beings can choose in life. But only one of them leads to eternal life. John the Baptist said:
« Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life » Jn 3:36a. Indeed, only the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth can give life and save, as the
Apostle Peter declared: « There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be
saved » Acts 4:12. Consider the end of the way you follow, and opt for the good one!

Tuesday, 10th: Choose the life-giving Way of God.
« I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live » Deut 30:19.
Reading 1: Mic 6:6-8. Reading 2: Deut 30:15-20. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Deut 30:19.
Introduction: Because God is love, then He allows us to choose which path we want to take (Deut 30:19a). However, He constantly reminds
us that only fellowship with Him is good for us, as the Psalmist sang: « Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act » Ps 37:5.
The Apostle Peter’s understanding of that pushed him to say to Jesus Christ: « Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life »
Jn 6:68.

Wednesday, 11th: Walk the life-giving Way of God.
« Amend your ways and your doings, and I will let you dwell in this place » Jer 7:3.
Reading 1: Jn 15:9-11. Reading 2: Jer 7:1-7. Preaching 1: (free choice). Preaching 2: Jer 7:3.
Introduction: The Word of God encourages us not only to choose Jesus, but also to walk in His ways, for our good. In fact, He gives us a
command when He says through the prophet Jeremiah: « Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way
lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls » Jer 6:16a,b. And He assures those who accompany Him: « O taste and see that the Lord is
good; happy are those who take refuge in him » Ps 34:8.

Thursday, 12th: Hold fast to the life-giving Way of God.
« For we have become partners of Christ, if only we hold our first confidence firm to the end » Heb 3:14.
Reading 1: Jn 10:22-28. Reading 2: Heb 3:12-19;4:1. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Heb 3:14-15.
Introduction: The path of those who believe in Jesus Christ is not an easy one. It is rather a small and narrow path (Mt 7:14), that is never
free from struggle because they have enemies (1 Pet 5:8). That is why the Apostle Paul encouraged his son Timothy, as he wrote: « Fight the
good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of
many witnesses »” 1 Tim 6:12. And in this battle, he who endures to the end will be saved (Mt 10:22b,;24:13). Jesus said to all who suffer
persecution for His sake: « To everyone who conquers, I will give permission to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise of God » Rev
2:7b.

Friday, 13th: The Word of God is the light that illuminates the life-giving Way.
« Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path » Ps 119:105.
Reading 1: Jn 1:1-5. Reading 2: Ps 119:97-105. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Ps 119:105.
Introduction: God does not leave His people who trust in Him walk in darkness, but gives them His word to illuminate their path. He tells us:
« My child, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For
they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh » Pro 4:20-22. The word of God, « the sword of the Spirit » (Eph 6:17), is a
powerful weapon that God has given us to defeat our enemy the devil, and this made the Psalmist sing: « I treasure your word in my heart, so
that I may not sin against you » Ps 119:11.

Saturday, 14th: Jesus Christ, the Way of eternal joy.
« You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy […] » Ps 16:11a,b.
Reading 1: Jn 7:37-39. Reading 2: Ps 16:1-11. Preaching 1 (free choice). Preaching 2: Ps 16:11.
Introduction: Jesus Christ is the Way which God prepared to lead the believers to life.. He gives eternal and boundless joy from now and
forever to sinners who receive His redemption. Concerning this life, the prophet Isaiah proclaimed: « A highway shall be there, and it shall be
called the Holy Way […]. The redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away » Isa 35:8a,9b-10a,b.
