The message: Why say that « Keeping the Commandments of God leads to life? » Because today is a time of apostasy and disobedience, as Paul indicated to his son Timothy, « You must understand this, that in the last days distressing times will come. For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, abusive [blasphemers; see Matt.9,3], disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, brutes, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power » 2 Tim.3: 1-5a. Its root cause is the transgression of God’s law, the disobedience of His commandments, the disregard for His word. Simply put, it is a lack of love for God; thus, keeping His commandments is considered an « unreasonable yoke. » If there is true love for God, it should be as the Apostle John declared, « For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome » 1 John 5: 3. Those who love God are prompted by His Holy Spirit to come to Jesus so that He may give them life, as « Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life » Jn.3: 36a. This is why Jesus admonished the Jews, saying: « You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is they that testify on my behalf. Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. […] But I know that you do not have a love of God in you » John 5: 39-40,42. As the disobedience to God’s commandments is indissociable from the nature of sinners, so Jesus said, « Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I came not to destroy, but to fulfill » Matt.5: 17. And he concludes this with the command: « If you love me, you will keep my commandments » John 14:15. So, love God and keep his commandments, for this is life!

Martha took great trouble to show her love for Jesus when He came to their house, yet Jesus approved Mary who was seated at His feet, listening to His words; He said: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. » Luke 10: 41-42.
